Steamed Pumpkin
Pumpkin sliced and steamed with nothing added, so the natural sweetness and soft, floury texture carry the whole dish. Sweet enough to serve after a meal.
Amongst the thousands of ways to cook pumpkin, steaming is the one that asks the least of the cook and is hardest to get wrong. The point is to slice it thin and leave it long enough that a chopstick goes through, so nothing but the vegetable's own flavour reaches the plate. It works as a side dish, a sweet course or a winter staple, depending on how much sugar the household adds at the table.
