Lemonade
Fresh lemon pounded with fruit syrup into a sweet-sour drink, balanced rather than sharp and even better cold. Barely more work than muddling, adding and shaking.
Old-fashioned lemonade stalls shake the fruit in a sealed shaker, which bruises the peel and pulls the oils out of the zest. The syrup in this version is a fruit syrup rather than plain sugar, which rounds out the acidity. Chilled, in a glass with ice, it is the simplest thing on a hot afternoon table.
