Bolo Rei (Portuguese King Cake)
A festive ring-shaped cake studded with dried and candied fruit, lightly spiced.
Bolo rei is the cake of Kings' Day in early January, when a whole family eats one together, and the small bean hidden in the rings is what keeps the children quiet at the table. The fruit is traditionally dried and candied rather than fresh, which keeps the crumb moist for days. Finding the bean in your slice is considered your share of luck for the year.
