Rote Grütze (German Warm Berry Compote)

This version of Rote Grütze is served warm, with cream or custard alongside rather than with the cold fruit and ice cream that usually accompany it. Warming the compote brings out an aroma that cold fruit simply does not have, and it makes the dish closer to a winter pudding than to a dessert. The berries should still hold their shape rather than collapsing into the syrup.
