Apfelkuchen (German Apple Cake)
A simple butter cake topped with spiced apple slices.
Apfelkuchen is the German autumn cake, and the version with a streusel top is as common as the plain butter cake underneath it. It is deliberately plain, baked in a single layer so it can be cut into squares for the coffee table. Tart apples go on raw rather than pre-cooked, which keeps the top from going soggy underneath the fruit.
